Puerto Ricans are not for sale

“Puerto Rican men and women have been portrayed in the literature through dualistic concepts of machismo and marianismo. […] According to marianismo, women are defined as dependent, passive, asexual, martyrs and morally superior to men. In contrast, Puerto Rican men have been depicted as authoritarian, self-centered, sexually aggressive, and mired in rigid gender roles.” (Iris López, Matters of choice. Puerto Rican women’s struggle for reproductive freedom, Rutgers University Press, NJ, 2008, p. 33). I haven’t met yet any Puerto Rican that embodied the absolute prototype of machismo and marianismo.

As yet another indicator of the meaning of living in a “post-racial” society, I submit to your consideration this video, “Rent a Rican Commercial”, posted by something called crabimosi on YouTube. It’s gotten over 150.000 views so far . . .  I learnt about it via the National Institute for Latino Policy (NiLP).

This skit has been floating around the net in the last couple of days (uploaded on Jan. 7th 2013) and it begins with a glum house party that instantly turns boisterous after a Puerto Rican (Nino Alicea) bursts onto the scene downing shots of rum and piña colada. And, another butt of the joke, at some point of the video you will hear this comment:

“But don’t ask him to cut your lawn, he ain’t no Mexican”

What on green Earth is this nod to Mexicans? Because why not, add a lawnmower joke to the bit while you are at it.

In my very personal opinion, this is a plain and clear example of negative stereotyping against the Latino community and it contributes to deepen the differences and tensions between the interacting “social groups” of Americans.

¿No has visto este vídeo? Sólo dura un minuto con 53 segundos.

I’m tired of the stereotyped picture of Puerto Ricans as a meek, submissive and sexually immoral people.
